Michael: Simon have you done much traveling?
One of our dogs at home, he used to go walking with my granddad, and it was on these old country roads, so very quite really, not many cars would pass so the dog, Jonathan, used to run off in front of my granddad and my granddad’s hearing wasn’t too good at that time, he was already quite old, so he wouldn’t always hear cars coming, so every time a car was coming, the dog would, Jonathan would come running back to my granddad so that, and he did this every time a car came so my granddad knew that if Jonathan came running back towards him, he knew that he had to stand in closer to the edge of the road so that, you know, he wouldn’t be in danger of being knocked down by a car or anything because those old country roads, you know when I was younger, we used to walk in the middle of the road, or you know, not quite by the edge, cause there were so few cars, you didn’t really need to keep by the edge and there were no foot paths along the side, so you were just walking along the edge of the road,
Thailand is so different from where I used to live in America. First of all, in my neighborhood there are many stray dogs, dogs with no home. During the day, they lay around and sleep and at night they fight and make a lot of noise barking and howling. Sometimes they’re even dangerous, especially people who ride by on their bikes, sometimes can be bit by these dogs. In America, stray dogs, are sent to the pound. The pound, the dog pound, is like a jail for dogs. Um, also, in front of my house, in front of every house in my neighborhood, there’s a fence, or a gate with a lock on it. I don’t like it. I think it’s a hassle because I have to take out my key, unlock the lock, then drive the car out, stop the car, get out, close the gate and then put the lock on again. In America, it’s much more convenient. Usually there’s a garage or a closed car park and when you drive up you have a remote control, and it opens, the garage door opens automatically, and in America usually we don’t have fences or gates around our front yard. Often there’s a gate around the backyard, but nothing in the front. Some of the really expensive houses in Thailand too, around there fence they have broken pieces of glass around the top to keep people who want to climb in from getting in. In Thailand usually to buy food, you go to the outdoor market. It’s very different than the clean supermarkets in America because they are lots of different smells and lots of action. You can smell fish, meat, trash, fruit, smoke from the barbeques, curry. Sometimes the smells are not so good. People come there, cook fresh food every day and they’ll stay there till they sell all their food. It’s very cheap. You can eat for about 2 or 3 U.S. dollars. So it’s not as clean and it doesn’t smell as nice as a big supermarket in America but I think it’s a lot more interesting. It makes the supermarkets in America seem very boring.
Adrienne: So, Mary, my battery has almost ran out. I’m so glad you had some but they’re cold.
I was browsing through a bookshop today and I picked up a book on food, which is quite usual for me cause I love food, em, but this book was a bit different, em, it tried to make the connection between the kind of food you eat and how it makes you feel so, for example, sometimes if I’m, if I’m a bit sad, we’ll say, I think to myself, oh, I’d love some chocolate and that will make me feel better, and sometimes it does, or it feels like it does anyway. I’m not sure if that really works, but the author of this book seemed to think that there’s a definite link between, what you, you know, what you eat and how you feel, or how it makes you feel. She talks about things like, em, yeah, things like chocolate and other sweet things. She says that it releases endorphins, so that, you know endorphins are chemicals, they kind of, they make you feel good, I think is the idea. They help you deal with stress as well as she says, so yeah, that seems to, that seems to work, I think. One of my friends told me recently that when she feels a bit, a bit sluggish as if she doesn’t have much energy, she’ll go to a restaurant or go home and cook some meat cause she feels that that gives her, gives her energy, so I was interested to read today that this author, she mentions how sometimes the body will feel a need to, I don’t know, to be more sharp, or to have energy and that sometimes that means that you need protein and protein obviously would comes from meat. It seems to work for my friend anyway, but I haven’t tried it myself anyway.
California is best known for its coastline and beaches. The state has nearly 2,000 km of coastline, so the state is known as a surfer’s paradise. From the tall cliffs that line the coast, you are almost always guaranteed a beautiful view of the Pacific Ocean, especially at sunset.
Todd: OK. I’m going to talk about movies. I love movies. I think many, many people around the world today love movies. I probably see one or two movies a week on DVD in my room. I watch the movies on my computer so I am a big, big fan of movies, and I watch them all the time, but I have three big complaints about movies, about Hollywood, my country, that I wish they would change. The first complaint is that movies have too many guns. This really bothers me. If you go into a video store and you look at the cover of all the movies, almost on 50% or more of the movie covers there is somebody holding a gun, and I think this is absolutely crazy. In my country, unfortunately there are many guns, but in reality, you never see guns. People have guns, but it’s not common to see a person with a gun and in movies, there’s always guns and shooting and killing and violence and blood and I just think it’s unnecessary, so I really wish that they would not have so many guns in movies and maybe not so much violence. My second complaint is that the stories of most of the movies today from Hollywood are terrible. They’re so bad that you can’t even watch the movie. I guess most movies now are geared towards special effects and visual effects so the story is often really bad and I think that’s just terrible.
Todd: OK, Adrienne, let’s talk about abilities. What are you good at?
Todd: So, Simon, are you still planning to take trip to Southeast Asia?
